Fast and furious SG opportunities
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. concluded a five-day working visit to Singapore aimed at strengthening economic ties and coordinating ASEAN priorities. Discussions with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong focused on trade, investment, digital technology, AI, the green economy, and renewable energy, ahead of Singapore's ASEAN chairmanship in 2027.
President Marcos Jr.'s visit to Singapore served to reinforce the Philippines' economic agenda. His presentations to business leaders at the Forbes Global CEO Conference outlined plans for expanding exports, improving the business environment through tax incentives, and advancing major infrastructure projects like the $20-billion Luzon Economic Corridor.
A notable aspect of the visit was the focus on energy security. Marcos's visit to the Singapore Nuclear Research and Safety Institute underscored the Philippines' interest in integrating nuclear energy into its power mix. This suggests a strategic effort to diversify energy sources and prepare for the demands of industrial development, with the President stating the visit strengthened the Philippines’ partnership and opened more opportunities.
Beyond high-level discussions, the visit included specific investment talks, such as FedEx's plans to expand its Clark Gateway Hub in Pampanga. This facility, expected to open in the fourth quarter of 2028, is projected to increase international air freight capacity, which could help micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) access global markets. Such infrastructure developments are central to supporting the broader economic goals discussed during the trip.
