AI Can Boost Insurance Uptake in India
Artificial intelligence (AI) could significantly enhance India's insurance sector by addressing productivity, cost, manual work, and customer experience challenges, according to a new report by McKinsey and Company. This comes as insurance uptake in India lags global standards, with penetration at 3.7% of GDP compared to a global rate of 7.2%.
The Indian insurance sector faces a protection gap, with flat growth in individual life insurance policies and modest increases in health insurance between fiscal years 2017 and 2025. This situation is compounded by rising operational costs, including a 20% compound annual growth rate in total operating expenses for private life insurers from fiscal years 2022 to 2025, and declining productivity, where new business premium per unit of employee expense fell by approximately 2% annually over the same period.
AI-led interventions are proposed across the insurance value chain to mitigate these issues. In sales, conversational AI can overcome fragmentation and language barriers in tier 2, tier 3, and rural markets. For frontline leadership, AI can provide real-time performance tracking for advisors, allowing managers to identify underperformance early and prioritize coaching actions. Underwriting could evolve from assisted to autonomous models, potentially improving turnaround times by allowing AI to handle lower-complexity cases within predefined guardrails.
Claims management stands to benefit from an AI-powered decisioning layer that automates assessment, prioritization, and fraud detection, shifting claims professionals' focus to complex judgment and customer advocacy. Similarly, in customer engagement, AI can move interactions from reactive to proactive and personalized, supporting a unified servicing model with conversational interfaces and intelligent agent assistance for representatives, enabling them to focus on complex customer interactions.
