Thunes Adds Venezuela to Its Global Real-Time Payment Network
Thunes has expanded its real-time payment network to Venezuela, enabling banks and payment providers to send money directly to Venezuelan bank accounts. This integration utilizes Venezuela’s instant interbank payment system, Credito Inmediato Interbancario, and supports remittances, freelancer payouts, mobile wallet transfers, and cash pickups.
The expansion into Venezuela addresses a stated demand for faster cross-border financial infrastructure, particularly for remittances, which were estimated at US$6 billion in 2025 by the source, accounting for 7 percent of the country's GDP. About half of these inflows were reported to originate from the United States, indicating the importance of efficient international payment corridors for the Venezuelan economy.
Thunes' entry into the Venezuelan market aims to facilitate financial connectivity for individuals and businesses, supporting gig economy platforms and money transfer operators. The company states it uses its SmartX Treasury System for liquidity management and Fortress Compliance Platform to support regulatory compliance, drawing on its more than 50 global regulatory licenses.
This move reflects Thunes' focus on Latin America as a growth region. While the immediate impact is on Venezuela, the strategic expansion into markets with significant remittance flows suggests a broader effort to capture value where cross-border payments are crucial for local economies. The reliance on established local payment systems, like Credito Inmediato Interbancario, illustrates a common approach for fintech companies entering new territories.
