Taiwan Bets on Chip Substrates as Its Next TSMC
Taoyuan, Taiwan, plans to develop a 40-hectare industrial complex for advanced ABF substrate makers. This initiative supports TSMC's planned 1.4-nanometer chip plant in the Longtan Science Park. The city aims to create a new semiconductor supply chain, potentially expanding the complex to 100 hectares. Land acquisition is largely complete, with construction targeting the second half of next year.
Taiwan's push into ABF substrates reflects a clear strategy to diversify its semiconductor dominance beyond TSMC's chip manufacturing. Taoyuan's 40-hectare complex, expandable to 100 hectares, directly addresses the rising demand for high-performance AI chips. The development aims to establish a second "sacred mountain" for the nation's economy, leveraging existing infrastructure and government support.
This initiative strengthens Taiwan's position in the global AI supply chain. It creates a new cluster around advanced packaging materials, benefiting local ABF substrate makers. The direct link to TSMC's 1.4-nanometer production facility in Taoyuan ensures a captive market and integrated development. This could reduce reliance on external suppliers for critical packaging components.
The test for Taoyuan is securing the promised 100,000 tons of industrial water daily and a new 161-kilovolt transmission network. These infrastructure commitments are crucial for large-scale production. If the city delivers, Taiwan will solidify its lead in both advanced chip manufacturing and essential packaging materials.
