Thunes and UnionPay Raise Daily Payout Limit to US$10,000 in China

Thunes and UnionPay International have expanded their partnership, raising the daily payout limit for instant transfers to US$10,000 per recipient cardholder in mainland China. This service allows financial institutions and payment operators to send funds directly to UnionPay cards across 79 major Chinese banks, including Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Bank of China, and China Construction Bank.

The increased daily payout limit directly addresses operational inefficiencies for financial institutions and money transfer operators sending funds into China. Previously, larger transfers might have required splitting amounts across multiple days or undergoing manual processing. With the new US$10,000 limit, these entities can now consolidate larger transfers into single, instant transactions, streamlining their cross-border payment flows.

This enhancement is facilitated by a direct technical connection established between Thunes and UnionPay International in January 2026. This arrangement integrates Thunes’ Direct Global Network with UnionPay’s infrastructure through a single API, granting network members immediate access to UnionPay cardholders in mainland China. The service targets various payment corridors, including Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, and the United States.

While the new limit aims to support higher-capacity transactions and reduce administrative burdens, the article does not specify what the previous daily payout limit was. This means the precise magnitude of the increase cannot be quantified. Thunes Deputy CEO Chloé Mayenobe describes the change as "breaking down legacy barriers" and "unlocking these higher transaction limits" to scale cross-border flows with improved speed and compliance.
