Huawei quickens AI chip pace, promises next entrant 3 quarters early
Huawei will launch its Ascend 960DT AI training chip in the first quarter of 2027. This moves the launch forward by nine months. The company also plans the Ascend 960PR inference chip for the third quarter of 2027, a quarter earlier than expected. These announcements came at the Huawei Connect 2026 conference in Shanghai.
Huawei's accelerated chip timeline is less about raw speed and more about ecosystem lock-in. The company promises an "annual upgrade cycle" for its Ascend series, with the 970 and 980 chips in 2028 and 2029. This cadence aims to build developer loyalty and reduce reliance on external suppliers. It is a direct response to US export controls.
For China, this rapid iteration is crucial for AI self-sufficiency. Huawei's ability to pull forward its 960DT chip by nine months shows domestic manufacturing and design capabilities are maturing.
