As BYD and Geely hit sales highs, pressure mounts on China’s smaller carmakers
China's leading carmakers, BYD and Geely Auto, reported their strongest monthly sales of the year in October, defying a broader downturn in the domestic automotive market. BYD handed over 490,168 cars, an 11% year-on-year increase, while Geely delivered 310,183 vehicles, up 1% from a year earlier, according to company statements.
The strong sales performance by BYD and Geely contrasts with an accelerating domestic market downturn that analysts say is driving industry consolidation. This suggests a widening gap between leading manufacturers and smaller rivals in China's competitive automotive sector.
Independent analyst Gao Shen notes that top players are demonstrating resilience by leveraging new models and advantages in cost and technology. This implies that their specific product strategies and operational efficiencies are enabling growth even as the overall market contracts.
The sustained sales momentum from these major players intensifies pressure on smaller carmakers, who are reportedly struggling to maintain profitability and survive in the fiercely competitive environment. This dynamic points to an ongoing shake-out within the industry, where scale and innovation may become increasingly critical for survival.
