RSTW in Quezon toasts to science-backed progress
The Calabarzon region in the Philippines opened its Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week on October 12, highlighting research-driven development. The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) reported commercializing 107 technologies and transferring them to 193 adopters by 2025, in addition to providing over 15,000 testing and calibration services.
The Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week illustrates a government-led strategy for technology dissemination in the Philippines, emphasizing localized applications. The event's focus on traditional ceremonies and community engagement suggests an effort to integrate scientific advancements into local culture and practical use, aiming for broader adoption beyond academic or industrial settings.
A key initiative highlighted is the rollout of Project Robust Optical Aerosol Monitor, a locally developed system for air quality monitoring. This system is described as the first Philippine-made air quality monitor and offers a lower-cost alternative to imported devices, suggesting a strategic move towards domestic technological self-sufficiency and accessibility for local government units.
The DOST-Calabarzon tailors its technology deployments to specific provincial strengths, such as industrial 3D metal printing in Laguna or solar-powered bamboo processing in Cavite. This targeted approach seeks to maximize the impact of interventions by aligning them with existing local capabilities and needs, indicating an adaptive strategy for regional development rather than a uniform rollout. This is further supported by the Community Empowerment through Science and Technology program, which assisted 4,110 communities through specific interventions valued at 8.65 million pesos through 2025.
