IMF chief says global outlook marked by ‘optimism and worry’ as Bangkok meetings end

IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva stated that the Annual Meetings in Bangkok concluded with a dual perspective of "optimism and worry" concerning the global economic outlook. Discussions highlighted economic resilience and AI's potential, alongside concerns about inflation, high debt, geopolitical conflicts, and climate risks.

The International Monetary Fund's recent meetings revealed a nuanced view of the global economy. While the resilience of some economies and the promise of artificial intelligence were noted positively, significant concerns persisted. These included ongoing inflation, rising global debt, and the economic impact of geopolitical events, specifically the US-Israel war on Iran, which has contributed to increased energy prices and global inflation.

Low-income countries face particular challenges from these economic shifts. They are more exposed to inflation and higher debt servicing costs, with repayment shares of government revenue increasing from 8% to 14% in recent years. This contrasts with some advanced economies that have seen growth bolstered by AI investment. The IMF acknowledges its role in supporting these nations through debt restructuring, domestic resource mobilization, and securing international finance.

While AI was recognized as a driver of growth, the IMF chief cautioned against over-reliance on any single factor for economic expansion, likening it to "stand[ing] on one leg." The meetings also addressed the growing urgency for regulation and guardrails for advanced AI models, spurred by recent security incidents. Georgieva noted a positive spirit of cooperation among various stakeholders on this regulatory front during the Bangkok discussions.
