Standard Chartered Signs Deal to Acquire Zodia Custody
Standard Chartered has signed definitive agreements to acquire Zodia Custody, following a non-binding offer made in May 2026. The bank plans to integrate Zodia's regulated custody operations into its existing digital asset custody business, while Zodia's software and professional services will transfer to Zodia Solutions, operating under SC Ventures.
This acquisition reflects Standard Chartered's move to consolidate digital asset custody capabilities within its existing financial services. By integrating Zodia's regulated operations, the bank aims to offer a unified platform for both traditional securities and digital asset services to institutional clients. This suggests a strategic effort to streamline offerings and potentially achieve revenue synergies by combining these services.
A key aspect of the deal involves separating Zodia's digital asset software and professional services into Zodia Solutions. This new entity, operating under Standard Chartered's venture arm SC Ventures, will be backed by investors including NAB Ventures, Northern Trust, and SBI Ventures Asset. Zodia Solutions is intended to provide technology infrastructure to financial institutions launching and expanding digital asset services, including Standard Chartered itself.
The transaction highlights a dual approach to engaging with digital assets: direct integration of regulated custody services into a traditional banking unit, and the spin-off of technology services under a venture arm. This structure allows Standard Chartered to maintain regulatory compliance and client continuity for custody, while also fostering broader industry adoption of digital asset infrastructure through Zodia Solutions, potentially attracting investment independently of the bank's core operations.
