Hon Hai unveils Mitsubishi deal
Hon Hai Precision Industry Co, also known as Foxconn Technology Group, has agreed to acquire a 50 percent stake in Mitsubishi Electric Mobility Co from Mitsubishi Electric Corp for ¥115 billion (US$727.5 million). The transaction, expected to close by October 1 next year, will establish a joint operation in the automotive equipment business, subject to regulatory approvals.
The partnership between Hon Hai and Mitsubishi Electric aims to combine Mitsubishi Electric Mobility's expertise in electric powertrains, software, and vehicle control with Hon Hai's manufacturing and market deployment capabilities. This suggests a strategic effort to leverage distinct strengths for developing and distributing automotive equipment.
Hon Hai stated the joint venture intends to bring Japanese technology and quality to global markets, aiming to enhance the value of "Made in/by Japan." This focus indicates an ambition to position the collaboration as a global player in automotive technology, emphasizing the origin and quality associated with Japanese manufacturing.
The investment of ¥115 billion (US$727.5 million) by Hon Hai for a 50 percent stake highlights a substantial commitment to this new automotive venture. The structure as a joint operation, rather than a full acquisition, implies that both companies see value in shared governance and strategic input for the long-term direction of Mitsubishi Electric Mobility.
