Market Rout Shakes Up Market Cap Rankings of South Korea’s Top 10 Conglomerates… Hyundai Motor Loses Third Place to LG
South Korea's top conglomerates experienced a significant market capitalization decline since the KOSPI peaked in June, with combined values falling 43.9%. Amid this downturn, LG Group surpassed Hyundai Motor Group to become the third-largest conglomerate, driven by strong performance in energy storage systems and enterprise infrastructure, including AI data centers.
The recent shift in South Korea's conglomerate rankings illustrates how specific sector performance can reshape market valuations even during broader economic contractions. LG's rise to third place, despite the overall market decline, was supported by its affiliates in energy storage solutions, particularly LG Energy Solution, which saw increased shipments and benefited from reconfigured US supply chains. This suggests that demand for critical infrastructure components, like ESS batteries, can offer resilience against market volatility.
Conversely, Hyundai Motor Group's slip to fourth place highlights the impact of multiple headwinds, including labor disputes, currency fluctuations, and rising raw material costs that affected its automotive and parts divisions. Furthermore, investor enthusiasm for its robotics and autonomous driving ventures waned without concrete strategic updates, indicating that market valuation for emerging technologies can be sensitive to the perceived clarity and progress of long-term plans.
GS Group's unique market capitalization increase, the only one among the top ten, was largely due to a boom in oil refining and strategic moves into AI data centers. The group's plans to build a large AI data center in Donghae by 2028 appear to have positively influenced its corporate valuation, with analysts suggesting this new business could substantially boost net profit. This shows how diversification into high-growth sectors like AI infrastructure can act as a revaluation catalyst for established conglomerates.
