What the Accenture Technology Vision 2025 Means for Management Consulting in 2027
Accenture's Technology Vision 2025 found 77% of executives anticipate autonomous agents will revolutionize system development within 3-5 years. However, an October 2026 Pulse of Change survey revealed that while 75% of global executives planned increased AI investments, only 25% realized sustained value. A Boston Consulting Group experiment demonstrated GPT-4 improved consultant work output and quality on suitable tasks.
The October 2026 Pulse of Change survey, conducted by Accenture, exposed a gap between AI investment plans and realized value. While 75% of 3,000 global executives intended to increase AI spending, only 25% reported achieving widespread, sustained value. This outcome is attributed not to technology failure, but to insufficient redesign of operating models, with only 15% of executives redesigning end-to-end processes and 20% deploying autonomous agents across functions.
Empirical evidence from a randomized Boston Consulting Group (BCG) experiment involving 758 consultants highlights the benefits of applying AI selectively. Consultants using GPT-4 for well-suited tasks, such as ideation, writing, and structured analysis, completed 12.2% more work, operated 25.1% faster, and achieved quality improvements exceeding 40%. Conversely, on tasks outside the AI's capability frontier, users were 19 percentage points less likely to provide correct answers.
This suggests that for management consulting, AI's value is maximized through "bounded autonomy," where AI tools are integrated into redesigned processes with clearly defined limits. The article proposes that a 2027 operating model must integrate task-risk classification and auditable governance to achieve realistic expectations, with controlled experiments pointing to 12–25% cycle-time reductions and over 40% quality gains on structured tasks.
