S Korea’s exports nearly double amid AI demand
South Korea's exports nearly doubled last month, marking the sharpest increase in over 50 years, according to government data. Exports rose 93.7 percent to US$115.28 billion, primarily driven by robust global demand for artificial intelligence (AI) investment, boosting shipments of semiconductors and computers.
The significant growth in South Korean exports is directly attributed to the escalating global investment in AI. Sales of semiconductors jumped 259.4 percent last month to US$56.44 billion, fueled by substantial facility investments from global technology firms vying for leadership in the AI industry. These components are fundamental to the advanced hardware required for AI development and deployment.
Complementing the semiconductor boom, computer sales experienced an even sharper spike, rising 496.6 percent. This increase is specifically linked to the growing demand for servers, which are critical infrastructure for delivering and scaling AI services. The combination of high-value chip components and the systems they power underscores the specific hardware requirements of the current AI investment wave.
While the reported export figures were also influenced by having more working days than a year earlier due to the timing difference in the Chuseok holidays, the underlying strength appears to stem from AI-related demand. The South Korean Minister of Trade, Industry and Resources, Kim Jung-kwan, anticipates that annual exports will surpass US$1 trillion within November, a milestone that would position South Korea as the fourth country globally to achieve this.
