Rokid launches ‘no man’s land’ retail experience with Hong Kong flagship store opening
Rokid has launched an unstaffed flagship store in Hong Kong’s Harbour City, which the company claims is the first of its kind in the global smart-glasses sector. The venue, which relies on monitor screens and a robotic system to greet shoppers, exceeded internal sales expectations during a trial period.
Rokid's new Hong Kong store represents an experiment in retail automation, particularly within the nascent smart-glasses market. By removing sales associates, the company is testing whether customers are willing to engage with technology-driven interfaces for a product that often benefits from hands-on demonstration and personalized assistance.
The reported sales figures, five to six pairs of HK$4,688 wearables daily during a trial, are presented as exceeding internal expectations. While these numbers are specific to a single location and a trial phase, they offer an early indication that a fully automated retail model might be viable for certain tech products, even high-value ones, in specific urban markets.
This automated approach could serve multiple company objectives beyond just standing out from competitors. It potentially reduces operational costs, allows for consistent brand experience without human variability, and provides a controlled environment for data collection on customer interaction with the product and store system. The success of this model in Hong Kong could inform Rokid's international expansion strategy for physical retail.
