DBS PayLah! Expands QR Payments to Taiwan
DBS PayLah! users can now make QR payments at over 250,000 merchants in Taiwan, covering about two-thirds of the TWQR network. DBS is the first Singapore bank to offer this cross-border service, which is set to expand to the full TWQR network and support merchant-scan-customer options by 2027.
DBS PayLah!'s expansion into Taiwan, facilitated by a NETS and FISC initiative announced in April 2026, means its more than three million users can now transact at night markets, restaurants, and retail outlets. This broadens DBS's existing cross-border QR payment services, which already include Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and UnionPay globally, without requiring users to download another payment app or rely on cash.
The initial coverage of 250,000 merchants represents a significant portion of Taiwan's TWQR network, though not its entirety. The phased rollout, with full network acceptance and a merchant-scan-customer payment option planned for 2027, suggests a deliberate approach to integrating the systems. This arrangement also includes reciprocal support, allowing DBS customers in Taiwan to use their digibank app to scan SGQR codes at participating merchants in Singapore from 2027.
The reported growth in transaction volumes for DBS's cross-border QR services, which grew 2.5 times year-on-year, alongside a doubling of unique users, provides a practical measure of demand for such convenience. This suggests that the ability to use a familiar home payment app overseas is a meaningful factor for consumers, validating the bank's strategy to integrate more such systems to make overseas payments feel more familiar.
