Meta Gains on Anthropic in AI Race: Guggenheim
Guggenheim Securities has raised Meta Platforms Inc.'s price target to $850, citing the company's progress in artificial intelligence and the potential of its Muse AI agent. The firm's analysis places Meta's AI capabilities at 56 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, just behind Anthropic's 58 among compared companies.
Guggenheim's assessment highlights Meta's improved standing in AI development, positioning it closely behind a leading player like Anthropic. This progress is a key factor in the raised price target, suggesting that the underlying AI models are becoming more competitive. However, the firm also points to the critical challenge of translating these technical gains into a viable business through the Muse AI agent.
The anticipated monetization strategy for Muse involves businesses paying to interact with consumers through their agents, mirroring Meta's core advertising model. This approach prioritizes user adoption, with Muse having reached 1.3 million daily active users after five weeks. While this growth is notable, it represents a tiny fraction of Meta's vast user base, indicating a long path to widespread integration and revenue generation.
Despite the optimism, Guggenheim forecasts increased capital expenditures for Meta, reaching approximately $225 billion by 2027, and expects free cash flow to remain under pressure through 2028. This substantial investment reflects the intense competition in the AI frontier model race, where sustained spending is necessary to avoid falling behind. The firm emphasizes that connecting stronger AI models with a robust agent business is crucial to prevent these investments from becoming mere cost centers.
