Ambani’s Jio seeks to raise $3.2B in what could be India’s biggest IPO
Jio Platforms, the digital arm of India's Reliance Industries, aims to raise as much as $3.2 billion in what could be India's biggest initial public offering. The listing, which sets a price band of ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 per share for up to 270 million new shares, will open for subscription on October 21.
Jio plans to allocate up to ₹275 billion ($2.9 billion) of the IPO proceeds to repay debt at its telecom subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm, with the remainder designated for general corporate purposes. This focus on debt reduction suggests a strategic move to strengthen the company's financial position as it expands its digital service offerings.
The IPO's upper price band valuation of about ₹10.3 trillion (around $108.3 billion) reflects a significant increase from Jio's 2020 valuation of ₹4.91 trillion (about $65 billion). This growth follows Jio's expansion beyond its initial telecom services into broadband, cloud, and other digital businesses, building on its base of over 524 million subscribers.
The scale of this offering is set to surpass Hyundai Motor India's ₹278.7 billion ($3.3 billion at the time) offering from 2024, which was previously India's largest. This potentially record-setting IPO will test public market appetite for a company that previously attracted over $20 billion from investors including Google and Meta.
