Figma announces new features to define how agents work on its platform
Figma introduced new features, including a Markdown-based editor called Figma Specs and expanded public beta access to its code layers feature, during its inaugural Config event in India. These updates aim to help define design rules for both human teams and AI agents, enhancing consistency in design and code integration.
Figma's introduction of Figma Specs, a Markdown editor for defining design language, directly addresses the challenge of maintaining brand consistency, especially with the increasing use of AI in design. By allowing teams to centralize design guidelines, code libraries, and FigJam diagrams, the company is providing a structured reference point for both human designers and AI agents. This helps to steer AI towards more predictable outcomes, which is critical given its non-deterministic nature.
The public beta release of code layers, which enables coding within designs for interactive prototypes, signifies Figma's commitment to bridging the gap between design and development. This feature, combined with the ability for agents to convert designs into code or modify existing code, suggests an effort to streamline the prototyping process. The chief design officer's observation that much code is built for discovery rather than shipping underscores the value of such tools in accelerating product iteration.
Figma's strategy appears to involve integrating its platform more deeply into the broader software development workflow, as evidenced by its support for over 20 new tools and the integration of Payload, its acquired headless CMS, with Figma Make. This move enables dynamic website generation and content management directly within the Figma ecosystem. The reported sixfold increase in Payload downloads suggests a growing demand for such integrated solutions.
