Huawei plans Q1 2027 launch of new AI chip as it takes on Nvidia
Huawei will launch its new Ascend 960DT AI chip in Q1 2027, accelerating its original Q3 2027 timeline. The company announced the updated schedule at its Huawei Connect conference. This pushes Huawei to challenge Nvidia and narrow China's AI computing gap with the U.S. The chip is part of Huawei's Peerium Computing Architecture, which links processors with memory, storage, and networking hardware.
Huawei's accelerated Ascend 960DT launch is a direct response to U.S. chip restrictions. Moving the timeline from Q3 to Q1 2027 shows Huawei's determination to build domestic AI infrastructure. This pushes China closer to self-sufficiency in advanced semiconductors. The company aims to double performance year by year with its Ascend 960 chips.
The test for Huawei is whether its Peerium Computing Architecture can scale effectively. Analyst Rui Ma noted a discrepancy: Huawei previously cited 15,488 chips for its Atlas 960 SuperPoD, but this week's announcement mentioned 4,096 chips. This reduction in scale for the SuperPoD system raises questions about immediate deployment capabilities. China's push for self-sufficiency is unlikely to stop, given the high stakes involved.
The thing to watch is Huawei's ability to integrate these chips into larger systems. Its Atlas 950 SuperCluster can connect up to 256,000 accelerator cards. If Huawei can deliver on this scale with the new 960DT, it will significantly boost China's AI computing power. This would directly challenge Nvidia's dominance in the region.
