Google partners with DepEd, CHED, TESDA to upskill teachers in AI

Google Philippines launched the Google AI Educator Series (GES) on October 13, 2026, offering free AI and Gemini training. The initiative partners with the Department of Education (DepEd), Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) to reach public school teachers, government workers, and the general public.

    Nexa's Summary

This initiative addresses a clear training gap among Filipino educators regarding AI. A Google Philippines study cited during the launch found that while 86 percent of educators are inclined to use AI, only 17 percent feel adequately trained. This suggests a significant demand for practical AI education, which the GES aims to meet by providing resources on ethical use, classroom applications, and prompt guidelines.

The multi-agency partnership is designed to ensure broad reach and official endorsement. DepEd's formal nationwide endorsement and National Educators Academy of the Philippines (NEAP) accreditation, which awards Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credit units required for license renewal, offer a clear incentive for teachers to participate. Similarly, CHED's advisory for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and TESDA's integration into its online program broaden the initiative's potential impact across different educational and professional sectors.

The program's stated goal of upskilling over one million public school teachers in AI, combined with the focus on practical tools to lighten administrative loads, indicates an understanding of the dual pressures on educators. While the initiative aims to integrate AI into curricula, Google also emphasizes that the "human touch" of teaching, including connection, empathy, and personal guidance, remains irreplaceable. This suggests a focus on AI as a supportive tool rather than a replacement for educators.
