China is beating the US in consumer AI adoption, thanks to super apps: Morgan Stanley
China leads the US in consumer AI adoption, driven by super apps like Tencent's and Alibaba's platforms. A Morgan Stanley survey found 80 percent of Chinese respondents use AI weekly for personal tasks, compared to 54 percent in the US. This rapid integration into daily life has propelled China's generative AI user base from 249 million in December 2024 to 602 million by December 2025. This growth outpaces mobile internet adoption over a similar period.
China's AI adoption lead over the US is a distribution story, not a capability one. American models may lead in frontier AI, but China's super apps deliver AI to 80 percent of its consumers weekly. This rapid deployment through existing platforms is the key differentiator. It shows how local habits and established tech ecosystems can drive adoption faster than raw model power.
This dynamic presents a clear challenge for other Asian markets. Companies in Southeast Asia, for instance, must decide whether to build their own AI capabilities or integrate Chinese or American models. The success of Tencent and Alibaba suggests that embedding AI into widely used local platforms is critical. This approach could accelerate AI adoption across the region, especially in markets with strong super app penetration.
The thing to watch is how other Asian tech giants respond to this playbook. Will Grab, GoTo, or Kakao prioritize deep AI integration into their own super apps? Their ability to replicate China's adoption rates will depend on this strategy. The next 12 months will show whether they can move beyond basic AI features and truly embed generative AI into their core services.
