Cruise ship suspends global voyage due to fuel costs

A US cruise ship, MV Odyssey, suspended its three-year global voyage in Cambodia, with operator Villa Vie Residences citing surging fuel costs linked to the war in Iran. The company stated monthly fuel expenses per cabin rose from US$1,800 to an estimated US$6,000-US$8,000 in parts of Asia, forcing hundreds of passengers to disembark.

The MV Odyssey, which marketed its suites as "floating homes" for lifetime purchase, ceased its journey two years in, leaving 203 passengers and 156 crew members in Cambodia. Villa Vie Residences attributed the suspension to unsustainable operating losses from increased fuel prices, which it stated were exacerbated by curtailed traffic in the Strait of Hormuz following the war in Iran, particularly affecting Southeast Asia.

However, passenger accounts introduce additional factors beyond the stated fuel costs. Paul Montoya, a retired resident, claimed the company was already struggling before the fuel crisis intensified, citing issues like itinerary changes, unreliable internet access, and declining food quality that had prompted many residents to leave earlier. Another passenger, Lynn Montoya, alleged that residents were repeatedly asked for additional funds for fuel and other expenses, and that crew members were not paid.

These reports suggest that while the surge in fuel costs was the immediate cause for suspension, the venture may have been operating with underlying financial and operational vulnerabilities. The combination of alleged mismanagement and declining service quality, as described by passengers, likely made the business highly susceptible to external shocks, turning increased fuel prices into an insurmountable obstacle rather than the sole factor.

Despite the logistical and financial turmoil, some passengers expressed deep disappointment and hoped the residential cruise concept could be resuscitated, underscoring the unique appeal of long-term living at sea. Villa Vie Residences could not be immediately reached for comment regarding the passenger allegations.
