I built a small engine that gives local LLMs real tools

A new Node.js project, L.A.T.E. (Local AI Tool Engine), aims to enhance local large language models (LLMs) by offloading tasks like exact math, web research, and memory retention to specialized external tools. The developer reports that this approach allows the model to focus solely on generating answers, addressing common LLM weaknesses.

Local LLMs are often noted for their conversational capabilities but reportedly struggle with fundamental tasks such as precise mathematical calculations, factual accuracy, and maintaining context across different interactions. The developer of L.A.T.E. states that these models can generate incorrect information or forget previous discussions, which prompted the creation of the tool.

L.A.T.E. functions as a Node.js toolkit that integrates external utilities with various LLMs, including local models like Ollama and LM Studio, and API-based services such as Groq and OpenAI-compatible platforms. The core mechanism involves these dedicated tools performing the exact work, for instance, a calculator for math or a web search function for research, while the LLM's role is limited to formulating the final answer based on the tool's output.

This system provides capabilities such as exact math, web research with cited sources, persistent memory across sessions, and file searching. The developer notes that setup requires Node.js 18 or newer and a single command. However, some limitations are reported, including potential rate-limiting for web searches and the possibility of small models still making errors even with tools. The current version also does not support streaming or PDF reading.
