China has gained pace in the space race by recovering rockets – but can it relaunch one?
Chinese commercial space companies are making strides in reusable rocket technology, aiming to close the gap with US leader SpaceX. China has achieved booster-recovery breakthroughs on both land and at sea recently. However, the country has not yet successfully reused a rocket. SpaceX claims over 600 missions with reusable first-stage boosters, highlighting the US lead in this cost-saving technology.
China's focus on rocket recovery is a necessary step, but it is not the full story. The real test is actual reuse, a hurdle China has yet to clear. SpaceX's 600-plus reusable missions set a high bar. Beijing's ambition for space leadership depends on moving beyond recovery to operational reuse.
This gap in reuse capability impacts Asia's commercial space sector. Chinese companies will face higher launch costs compared to their US counterparts if they cannot achieve reusability. This could slow the development of satellite constellations and other space-based services across the region, making them less competitive.
The thing to watch is when China announces its first successful rocket reuse. This would mark a significant technical milestone. It would also signal a more direct challenge to established players and could accelerate cost reductions for future Asian space missions.
