Samsung Taps Stanford Scholar to Lead North American AI Research

Samsung's recruitment of Juan Carlos Niebles points to a clear pivot from AI agents to physical AI. The company previously prioritized Bixby-like agent development, especially with its first AI phone launch two years ago. Now, Samsung is overhauling its leadership and actively seeking physical AI expertise, including for the Toronto AI Center. This reflects a broader industry shift toward tangible AI applications.

The leadership change positions Samsung to deepen partnerships with North American big tech firms. The company already collaborates with Nvidia on AI factory initiatives and with Google on multimodal AI, including Gemini integration into new AI glasses this year. For Asian markets, Samsung's next generation of AI products, from humanoid robots to wearable AI, will likely emerge from these North American collaborations. This could accelerate physical AI adoption across the region.

The real test for Samsung is commercialization speed. The company created a dedicated Robotics Business Team in July, reporting directly to Device eXperience head Roh Tae-moon. Chief Technology Officer Yoon Jang-hyun now leads both hardware and AI software development within this unit. Samsung must quickly translate its North American research into market-ready products to compete effectively in the rapidly evolving physical AI sector.
