BYD to launch the new “Great Seagull” EV hatchback this year, Ocean series GM shared
BYD will launch the new electric hatchback "Great Seagull" (Da Hainiao) in China this year, as confirmed by Zhang Zhuo, general manager of BYD’s Ocean network sales division, at the Chengdu Auto Show 2026. This 4.2-meter vehicle will be positioned between the existing Seagull and the Dolphin models. The Great Seagull applied for a sales license in China in July 2026, revealing core specifications. It will offer a single electric motor with 95 kW (127 hp) and two LFP battery options providing 320 to 420 km of CLTC range. The car was recently seen during road tests equipped with a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor, indicating advanced assisted driving capabilities.
BYD's introduction of the Great Seagull EV hatchback this year points to a strategic expansion within its Ocean series, targeting a specific segment between its popular Seagull and Dolphin models. The vehicle's dimensions, at 4205/1810/1570 mm, and its 95 kW motor with up to 420 km CLTC range, suggest it will serve as a more affordable, slightly less powerful alternative to the Dolphin. This move could allow BYD to capture a broader market share in China's competitive EV landscape, especially against rivals like Geely Xingyuan and GAC Aion UT. The inclusion of a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor for the DiPilot 300 assisted driving system is a notable feature for this segment, suggesting BYD is pushing advanced tech into more accessible price points. This could accelerate the adoption of advanced driver-assistance systems in the Chinese mass market. However, the launch of the Great Seagull may also lead to the discontinuation of the entry-level Dolphin variant, as BYD optimizes its product lineup to avoid internal cannibalization.
