Mastercard Launches AI Assistant to Simplify Card Benefits
Mastercard has launched an AI-powered assistant, Mastercard Max, to help cardholders find, understand, and use their card benefits. The tool provides personalized recommendations based on card type, eligibility, location, and circumstances. Initially launching with Brazil’s C6 Bank, Citi is exploring its use in Singapore and Hong Kong, with other banks in Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Kenya, and Morocco also working to introduce the service.
Mastercard Max is an AI-powered assistant designed to make credit card benefits more accessible. The tool allows cardholders to ask questions and receive tailored suggestions, such as airport lounge access reminders or dining offers, through their bank's mobile app. Mastercard manages the core technology and content, enabling banks to integrate the service into their existing digital platforms.
This approach aims to address the common challenge of cardholders underutilizing their benefits. By providing personalized recommendations based on specific card details, eligibility, location, and circumstances, the assistant could clarify what is available. Bunita Sawhney, Mastercard’s Chief Consumer Product Officer, stated this initiative is intended to unlock more value for cardholders from their existing benefits and foster deeper relationships between issuers and customers.
The practical benefit for cardholders, however, is contingent on individual banks adopting and effectively integrating Mastercard Max. While Mastercard indicates the tool is globally available, customer access relies on banks introducing the service. For financial institutions like Citi, which is exploring its use in Singapore and Hong Kong, the decision to integrate will likely involve assessing its potential to boost customer engagement and identify cross-sell opportunities, as suggested by Ms. Sawhney.
Beyond adoption, the quality and accuracy of the AI's recommendations will be critical for building and sustaining cardholder trust. An assistant that consistently provides relevant and correct information could genuinely simplify benefit navigation, potentially leading to greater satisfaction and perceived value from existing cards.
