Asean AI program to train 1.7M learners, educators
The AI Ready Asean program will train over 1.7 million students, K-12 teachers, and university faculty across Southeast Asia through 2028. This expanded initiative, part of the AI Opportunity Fund: Asia-Pacific, shifts from basic AI awareness to applied learning. The Asean Foundation, in collaboration with AVPN and supported by Google.org and ADB, will develop locally adapted curricula. This effort aims to strengthen AI skills for the region's workforce and align with national education priorities.
The AI Opportunity Fund: Asia-Pacific has already trained over 500,000 workers and 50,000 small businesses since its 2024 launch. This second phase of AI Ready Asean will extend that reach to 1.7 million educators and students. The focus on "applied learning" is critical; it moves past generic AI awareness to practical implementation in classrooms and research. This is a necessary step for the region to build a skilled AI workforce.
The program's success hinges on local adaptation. Working with education ministries to align with national AI priorities will determine its true impact. This approach is smarter than a one-size-fits-all curriculum. For example, a country like Vietnam, with its strong manufacturing base, will have different AI application needs than Singapore, a financial hub. Tailored training will make the 2026-2030 Asean Work Plan on Education more achievable.
The real test for this initiative is its ability to integrate AI skills into existing educational frameworks, not just offer standalone courses. The program is scheduled to run through 2028. The fourth regional convening in December 2026 will show if it can foster genuine policy shifts. Without ministerial buy-in and curriculum changes, the 1.7 million trained individuals risk becoming an impressive but isolated statistic.
