AI Search Readiness Checker: Can AI Crawlers Read Your Site?
A new free tool allows website administrators to check their site's technical readiness for AI crawlers from platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity, alongside traditional search engines. The tool clarifies that crawlers used for AI model training, such as GPTBot, are distinct from those powering AI search results like OAI-SearchBot, enabling selective access control.
Website operators often face a dilemma when managing AI bot access: whether blocking crawlers used for AI model training might inadvertently remove their site from AI search results. The new AI Search Readiness Checker addresses this by distinguishing between different crawler types. For instance, it reports that GPTBot is used for training, while OAI-SearchBot is behind ChatGPT search. This means a site can block GPTBot to prevent its content from being used as training data, yet still allow OAI-SearchBot access to appear in ChatGPT's search outcomes.
The tool assesses technical readiness by checking various factors beyond just `robots.txt` rules. It verifies HTTP status, redirect chains, `noindex` tags, and canonical URLs. A critical check involves determining if content is visible without JavaScript, as most AI crawlers process raw HTML. If a page's essential text relies on JavaScript execution, these crawlers may perceive it as empty, impacting its discoverability.
The checker also identifies potential blocking by firewalls or bot-protection services like Cloudflare, which can sometimes be configured to block AI crawlers without the site owner's explicit intention. While the tool provides a score based on these technical checks, it explicitly states that it does not measure actual rankings or citations within AI assistants. Technical readiness is a prerequisite for visibility, but it does not guarantee prominence in AI-powered answers.
