What Alibaba left blank about Qwen4
Alibaba’s Qwen AI platform teased a forthcoming model on November 6, inviting speculation about "Qwen4." The announcement follows CEO Eddie Wu’s September address, where he detailed plans for over 20 gigawatts of data-center capacity by 2032 and introduced the Zhenwu V900 accelerator, describing chips as "power plants" for an intelligence economy.
Alibaba appears to be pursuing a two-pronged strategy to advance its artificial intelligence capabilities amidst chip constraints. One aspect involves significant domestic investment in hardware infrastructure. CEO Eddie Wu outlined an ambition for substantial data-center capacity by 2032 and introduced the Zhenwu V900 accelerator, positioning chips as foundational for an intelligence economy. This indicates a focus on building the physical resources necessary for AI development.
The second approach leverages the widespread adoption of its existing Qwen models. These "ordinary-sized" models, capable of running on various machines, had accumulated approximately 942 million cumulative downloads by March 2026. A study found that by February, 69% of newly uploaded model derivatives in a measured ecosystem were built on Qwen, highlighting its role as a base for broader development.
This strategy extends to consumer technology, with Alibaba’s Qwen family integrated into Apple’s China-specific Apple Intelligence offering, which began its developer beta on November 4. Such integration demonstrates Qwen's reach beyond specialized developers, finding a place in tightly controlled consumer systems. This combination of infrastructure build-out and broad software adoption is Alibaba's response to the prevailing export policy affecting chip supply.
