Who Dominates Indonesia's Creative Economy Workforce?
Indonesia's creative economy sector now employs 27.40 million people, exceeding the 2025 target of 25.55 million. Gen Z and Millennials comprise 63 percent of this workforce, with women making up 58 percent. Investment in the sector has reached Rp183.01 trillion, surpassing the 2025 target range of Rp123.85-136.28 trillion. The sector's export value hit US$31.94 billion in 2025, representing 12 percent of total non-oil and gas exports.
Indonesia's creative economy is growing faster than official targets. The sector employs 27.40 million people, already exceeding the 2025 goal by nearly two million. This growth is driven by younger generations, with Gen Z and Millennials making up 63 percent of the workforce. This demographic dominance reflects Indonesia's large youth population and their engagement with digital creative fields like content creation and app development.
The Rp183.01 trillion investment in the creative economy also outpaces the 2025 target. This financial commitment supports the 17 sub-sectors, including film, gaming, and culinary arts. The robust export value of US$31.94 billion in 2025 further demonstrates the sector's economic impact. This performance positions Indonesia as a regional leader in creative exports, especially against neighbors like Vietnam and Thailand.
The emphasis on technological reliability, highlighted by the Circuit Global Championship Indonesia, is key. Device technicians are critical for the creative economy's digital output. The thing to watch is whether Indonesia can sustain this investment and export growth, especially as the 2026 investment target is set lower at Rp131-146.4 trillion. A slowdown in investment could temper the sector's expansion.
