Drdo Zero Mk India Pact To Build Indigenous Dilution Refrigerator
India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) signed its first high-value deep-tech project with a startup, Zero mK India Private Limited. The agreement, worth up to Rs 500 crore, focuses on developing an indigenous 20 mK Dilution Refrigerator for quantum applications. This project aims to reduce India’s reliance on imported cryogenic infrastructure for its quantum technology stack. It is the initial project under a new Rs 500-crore corpus for deep-tech initiatives approved by Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh.
India’s push for quantum independence now includes critical cryogenic hardware. The DRDO’s Rs 500-crore pact with Zero mK India Private Limited targets a 20 mK dilution refrigerator. This is not just a research agreement. It is a direct effort to build a domestic supply chain for quantum computing. The project aligns with the National Quantum Mission, aiming to strengthen advanced cryogenics and strategic technologies.
This partnership benefits Zero mK India directly. It also provides a clear path for other Indian deep-tech startups to engage with defence research. India’s quantum stack currently relies on imported specialized systems. This indigenous route cuts that dependence. The Solid State Physics Laboratory (SSPL) will monitor the project, ensuring technical oversight.
The thing to watch is the delivery timeline for the 20 mK system. Success here would validate the DRDO’s new collaboration model with startups. Failure would slow India’s quantum progress and raise questions about the Rs 500-crore corpus’s effectiveness. This project sets a precedent for future DRDO-industry partnerships in emerging technology domains.
