Veritas expands its anti-counterfeit chip to jewelry, trophies, and fragrance bottles
Veritas, a startup developing anti-counterfeit chips, has introduced a second version of its authentication technology designed for metal and glass surfaces. The company, which recently competed in TechCrunch Disrupt Startup Battlefield, announced a partnership with ATHLOS to embed its chips in championship crowns and has raised $1.75 million in pre-seed funding.
Veritas aims to counter "superfakes" by combining secure chip responses with physical product integration. Founder Luci Holland stated that their approach, which includes a tamper-detection wire and secure responses with each tap, is designed to be more difficult to defeat than methods relying on reproducible digital records like QR codes or static NFC links.
The second-generation Veritas chip expands its application from garments to include jewelry, trophies, hard-surface products, and glass objects such as fragrance bottles. This broader compatibility allows brands to integrate authentication directly into a wider array of luxury items, addressing the challenge of replicating brands' marks on diverse materials.
Beyond its core authentication function, Veritas offers an iOS app for consumers and a brand portal for companies to manage product records and build owner experiences. These digital tools enable brands to provide features such as clubs, event check-ins, and segmented early access to product drops, aiming to enhance customer engagement through verified ownership.
The startup's pre-seed funding, led by Alexis Ohanian's Seven Seven Six, indicates investor confidence in its technology. While this financing provides a longer runway, the practical success of Veritas will depend on how widely brands adopt its secure chip technology and whether consumers engage with the associated digital experiences to verify goods.
