Vietnam Airlines seeks 25 Airbus jets to revive its low-cost carrier

Vietnam Airlines is reportedly seeking 20 to 25 Airbus A321neo jets to relaunch a low-cost carrier, potentially by next year. This follows shareholder approval for a new medium-term strategy that includes operating both full-service and budget airline brands, according to individuals familiar with the matter.

Vietnam Airlines' reported intent to re-enter the low-cost travel segment reflects the competitive pressures from newer, agile airlines in Vietnam's growing economy. The national carrier's domestic market share has reportedly declined to 37% in October, behind Vietjet's 40% and Sun PhuQuoc's 15% after just a year of operation. This indicates a market shift where budget offerings are capturing a significant portion of air travel demand, necessitating a strategic response from the incumbent.

The airline's previous attempt in the no-frills space, Pacific Airlines (formerly Jetstar Pacific), currently offers minimal services. This suggests that re-entry into this segment is not a new concept for the company, but rather a renewed strategic focus backed by a potential fleet acquisition. The decision to seek new A321neo jets capable of seating 240 passengers suggests a commitment to scale and efficiency in its budget offering, aiming to directly compete on capacity and cost.

However, the plans and timeline for this new venture are not finalized and could change based on market conditions, as noted by sources familiar with the matter. This uncertainty is a practical consideration for any large-scale fleet acquisition and service launch, especially in a dynamic market with established low-cost competitors. The success of this re-entry will depend on effective execution and market reception amidst an already crowded field, rather than just the intent to acquire aircraft.
