U.S. Shoppers Can Now Discover and Purchase Eligible Newegg Products Directly Within the Gemini App, and Google Search, Including AI Mode
Newegg announced its integration of Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) powered checkout on Google. This allows U.S. shoppers to purchase eligible Newegg products directly within AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app, without leaving the conversational interface. Newegg will serve as the merchant of record for these transactions.
This integration by Newegg extends in-conversation purchasing capabilities to Google's AI platforms. The company previously enabled similar functionalities on ChatGPT and Perplexity, indicating a strategy to embed its catalog directly into various AI conversational experiences. The UCP facilitates a seamless transition from product discussion to checkout via Google Pay, with Newegg handling fulfillment and customer support.
The move reflects a broader industry trend towards what Google refers to as 'agentic commerce,' where AI assists users through the shopping journey. Newegg's Chief Information Officer, Montaque Hou, stated the company's intent to be at the forefront of how AI influences technology purchases, aiming for Newegg to be a primary answer when AI is queried about buying technology products.
Google's VP/GM, Merchant Shopping, Ashish Gupta, characterized this development as a milestone in scaling agentic commerce, suggesting a collaborative effort within the industry to build AI-driven shopping experiences. While the current implementation is for U.S. shoppers and covers a growing selection of eligible Newegg products, it demonstrates a model for how retailers might integrate more deeply with AI platforms.
