US AI firm Anthropic enables Chinese-language options for Claude chatbot
US AI firm Anthropic has introduced Chinese-language options for its Claude chatbot in supported markets, as reported by the South China Morning Post. This development includes simplified and traditional Chinese as on-screen language choices, though access remains blocked for users in mainland China.
Anthropic's decision to enable Chinese language options, including simplified and traditional character sets, primarily targets overseas Chinese communities. Analysts cited by the SCMP suggest this focus on the diaspora is more likely than an immediate plan to enter the mainland Chinese market directly.
The report notes that China briefly appeared as a billing country option and that screenshots on X showed UnionPay as a payment choice, though the SCMP could not independently confirm active UnionPay payments. While these elements suggest some technical exploration of broader Chinese user engagement, the continued blocking of mainland Chinese users indicates a cautious approach to market entry rather than an imminent shift.
This situation illustrates a distinction between offering language support and gaining full market access. Providing language options expands the potential user base among Chinese speakers globally without necessarily navigating the complex regulatory and operational challenges of direct market entry into mainland China. Any potential for payment or billing infrastructure would further enable these users, but current access restrictions remain.
The evidence indicates Anthropic is exploring ways to serve Chinese-speaking users internationally, rather than signaling an immediate change in its mainland China policy. The company appears to be testing broader engagement while maintaining existing access limitations.
