StanChart to Offer Digital Asset Custody Services in Singapore
Standard Chartered plans to introduce digital asset custody services in Singapore, targeting institutional and accredited investor corporate clients. This service will integrate with the bank’s existing traditional asset servicing capabilities, supporting selected cryptoassets, stablecoins, and tokenised real-world assets, subject to regulatory approval.
Standard Chartered's expansion into digital asset custody in Singapore builds on its existing operations in the UAE, Luxembourg, and Hong Kong. This pattern suggests a deliberate strategy to establish a presence in financial centers where demand for digital asset solutions is growing. The bank's prior backing of institutional digital asset custodian Zodia Custody also indicates a sustained interest in this specific segment of the digital asset market.
The proposed service aims to combine traditional asset servicing with digital asset custody and tokenisation capabilities. By offering an institutional-grade framework for both traditional and tokenised assets, Standard Chartered is working to provide comprehensive support across various asset lifecycles. This integration could offer clients a unified approach to managing a broader spectrum of assets within a regulated environment.
Standard Chartered executives, Patrick Lee and Ole Matthiessen, noted Singapore's position as a hub for financial innovation and the increasing need for reliable digital asset solutions. Their statements emphasize the perceived importance of secure and regulated custody as a foundational element for the institutional adoption and scaling of tokenised assets. The focus on robust infrastructure highlights the technical requirements for secure movement and safekeeping of these assets at an institutional level.
