Trump's midterm defeat could shake up AI: Why Democrats' victory may impact Nvidia, data centres, India's $105 billion opportunity
Following the US midterm elections in 2026, the Democratic Party gained control of both the Senate and House of Representatives. While major US indices saw broad gains, data center companies, Tesla, and SpaceX experienced declines. This market reaction reportedly reflects concerns over potential increased regulation of AI infrastructure and development under the new congressional majority.
The shift in US congressional control to the Democratic Party after the 2026 midterm elections has introduced uncertainty for the Artificial Intelligence sector. Despite a broader positive market reaction for major indices, firms tied to AI infrastructure, such as data center companies, Tesla, and SpaceX, saw their stock values fall. This divergence is attributed to concerns about future data center construction, particularly in states where Democrats made gains.
A key development was the victory of Democrat Gina Hinojosa in Texas, who campaigned on pausing new data center projects until stronger safeguards are introduced. Texas accounts for an estimated 27% of planned US data center capacity, according to Wells Fargo. Her election reportedly increased pressure on AI infrastructure stocks, with CoreWeave, a specialized cloud provider, falling 7%. This suggests that local political outcomes are beginning to directly influence the expansion plans and valuations of AI infrastructure providers.
Analysts believe that the AI sector should prepare for increased regulation and scrutiny, as Democrats are described as vocal critics of AI and the private sector. Concerns cited include the potential for higher energy costs from data centers and generative AI, as well as job displacement across various skill levels. This anticipated regulatory environment could impact major AI players, including Nvidia, whose CEO has previously engaged with lawmakers.
