Top US spy agency to focus on AI and China WaPo
The US National Security Agency (NSA) is undergoing its largest internal reorganization in a decade. Director Joshua M. Rudd plans to create five new departments by mid-October. This suggests the US intelligence community prioritizes AI integration over established procurement rules, especially for advanced capabilities.
This NSA overhaul directly impacts Chinese AI firms. Last week, the NSA, FBI, and CISA accused six Chinese companies, including DeepSeek and Alibaba, of "industrial-scale" AI distillation. Beijing rejected these claims, warning of "resolute countermeasures." The US focus on AI competition will increase pressure on Chinese companies and could accelerate their domestic model development.
The thing to watch is the NSA's timeline. Director Rudd wants five new departments by mid-October, with full operational capacity in early 2027. The previous major restructuring, "NSA 21" from 2016, remains incomplete. This history suggests delays are likely, potentially impacting the agency's stated AI and China objectives.
