Tencent, Visa Expand Partnership to Explore AI-Powered Payments
Tencent and Visa are expanding their partnership to explore transactions powered by AI agents, formalized through a memorandum of understanding (MoU). The collaboration aims to deepen cross-border payment connectivity for travelers entering and leaving China, while also investigating how AI can facilitate product discovery, selection, and purchase completion for eligible users.
Tencent and Visa are advancing their existing partnership, moving beyond current cross-border payment solutions to integrate artificial intelligence into commerce. The immediate goal is to enhance payment connectivity for international travelers, allowing them to use Tencent’s TenPay Global platform and Visa Pay across Weixin Pay and Visa networks. This initiative also seeks to expand Visa Direct's capabilities, enabling more overseas senders to transfer funds into the Weixin Pay ecosystem.
A key focus of this expanded partnership is the exploration of "AI-powered agentic payments." This involves examining how Visa Intelligent Commerce could enable AI agents to assist users by finding products, selecting items, and completing purchases. The companies state that maintaining consumer control and security will be central to these developments, suggesting AI would act as a sophisticated digital assistant to streamline the shopping and payment experience.
Beyond direct consumer assistance, the agreement extends to examining payment capabilities for developer agents and other emerging AI commerce models. This indicates a broader interest in how AI can integrate into various digital transaction scenarios. The current arrangement builds on an existing collaboration covering gaming payments and risk management through Tencent's Midas platform, with plans to extend this relationship to Tencent's overseas AI businesses.
It is important to note that this is an exploratory phase, formalized through an MoU, and any proposed initiatives are subject to applicable regulatory, data governance, and security requirements. The specific implementation details, user interfaces, or timelines for these AI-powered payment solutions have not been provided, reflecting the early stage of this collaboration.
