Maybank Extends Ringgit Corporate Accounts to Singapore Businesses
Maybank has launched a Malaysia Ringgit Current Account for eligible Singapore-based companies, enabling them to hold, receive, and transact in ringgit directly from Singapore for approved Malaysia-related activities. Maybank states this is the first such account offered by a bank in Singapore, linking it to increasing economic activity between the two countries.
This new account allows Singapore-based companies to manage Malaysian Ringgit without needing to open non-resident accounts in Malaysia or rely solely on ad hoc spot foreign exchange conversions. Businesses can now convert funds from their Maybank Singapore dollar or other foreign currency accounts in advance, maintaining a ringgit balance for upcoming payments. Maybank describes this as "anticipatory foreign exchange," which offers the flexibility to time currency conversions ahead of scheduled obligations.
The account is designed to reduce transactional friction and costs. It requires no initial deposit, minimum balance, or monthly fees. Maybank also reports no remittance commission or commission in lieu of exchange. For transfers to Maybank Malaysia, processing and agent-bank charges are currently waived until further notice. Transfers to other Malaysian banks, however, will incur an RM22 agent-bank charge per transaction, with potential additional processing fees.
Maybank explicitly links this offering to the growing economic ties between Singapore and Malaysia, particularly citing the formalization of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) in January 2025. Alvin Lee, Country CEO of Maybank Singapore, noted increased demand for cross-border banking services since the JS-SEZ announcement, emphasizing the account's role in facilitating business flows and strengthening regional supply chains.
