Google Wallet May Add Alipay+ QR Payments for Overseas Travellers
Google Wallet appears to be preparing support for QR code payments via Alipay+, according to an Android Authority report. The publication found references to an “Overseas QR payments” option and a “Traveler QR” support page within the Google Wallet app. This potential feature would enable Google Wallet users to make international QR payments, with Google’s support page currently identifying Singapore as the sole supported destination.
Google Wallet may integrate a “Traveler QR” feature, designed to enable users to make QR code payments when traveling internationally. This functionality was observed through app teardowns by Android Authority, which uncovered references to an “Overseas QR payments” option within the application and a dedicated support page for “Traveler QR.” The feature is reportedly designed to activate automatically when a user's phone detects they are in a supported destination.
Google’s support documentation currently identifies Singapore as the only supported destination for this potential feature, specifically through Alipay+ partner networks. This suggests that if “Traveler QR” is released, a Google Wallet user traveling in Singapore could utilize their app to scan QR codes for transactions at merchants connected to the Alipay+ network, integrating into a widely used local payment system for overseas visitors.
However, Google has not formally announced “Traveler QR” or confirmed its availability. Android Authority cautioned that features discovered via app teardowns are under development and may not necessarily reach a public release. While Android Authority noted potential future expansion to markets like Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines, Google has not corroborated support for these regions.
