US-based Shield AI is expanding its drone supply chain presence in Taiwan. The company's Taiwan representative, Chen Yi-ju, noted that Taiwanese materials now account for 16 percent of Shield AI products, up from less than 1 percent two years ago. Shield AI expects this figure to reach 25 percent of an individual drone's value. The company plans to double its local staff next year and establish capabilities for logistics, maintenance, training, and assembly in Taiwan.
Shield AI's deepening commitment to Taiwan is more than a supply chain diversification play. It reflects an effort to build sovereign AI capabilities for military drones outside China. Taiwan's mature electronics and hardware industries are critical for this shift, particularly in making drones lighter and improving heat dissipation.
The real win for Taiwan is not just component procurement. Shield AI's plan to provide software development kits allows Taiwanese engineers to design custom mission functions. This enables Taiwan to develop its own AI models, moving beyond simple import of foreign systems.
The thing to watch is how quickly local assembly and maintenance capabilities scale. Shield AI wants to avoid sending products back to the US for support during wartime. The company's collaboration with institutions like the National Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology will be key to achieving this operational independence.
