Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 vs Dimensity 9600 Pro: Benchmarks, spec sheet, and more
Qualcomm and MediaTek have launched their latest smartphone chipsets, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Dimensity 9600 Pro, respectively. Both chips mark a transition to a 2nm manufacturing process, promising gains in performance and power efficiency. Qualcomm's new chip also integrates AI processing directly into the GPU.
The transition to a 2nm node for these new chipsets represents a significant manufacturing upgrade from the prior 3nm process. This change is linked to substantial power efficiency improvements, with Qualcomm claiming a 37% gain and MediaTek touting a 61% uplift in multi-core power usage. Such efficiencies are critical for mobile chipsets, potentially allowing for higher peak clock speeds, like Qualcomm's stated 5 GHz, while managing thermal output and battery life.
Performance comparisons between the two chips show nuanced differences. In Geekbench 7, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 achieved a 21% higher single-core score, while the Dimensity 9600 Pro posted a 4% higher multi-core score. Across the AnTuTu benchmark, Snapdragon maintained a 6% overall lead. A breakdown shows Snapdragon with a 7% lead in CPU score and strong memory and UX performance, but Dimensity's GPU test score was 5% higher.
Qualcomm's integration of AI processing directly onto the GPU silicon is a notable design shift. This approach aims to bypass the need to route AI workloads to a separate NPU, potentially reducing visual processing latency for real-time neural rendering. Qualcomm claims this directly contributes to a 44% improvement in GPU performance and a 40% increase in GPU power efficiency.
