Samsung Weighs Price Hike for Galaxy S26, Launches Refurbished Models 15% Cheaper
Samsung is reviewing price increases for its Galaxy S26 series due to rising semiconductor costs. The base Galaxy S26 could rise to 1.4 million won from 1.254 million won. Concurrently, Samsung launched certified refurbished S26 models in major markets including India. These devices are priced about 15% cheaper than new models, with the base S26 at 1.06 million won. This dual strategy aims to expand market share and offer wider consumer choice.
Samsung's decision to launch refurbished Galaxy S26 models only six months after their initial release is aggressive. Past S-series devices took nine to fifteen months to appear on the refurbished market. This accelerated rollout, timed with Apple's iPhone 18 Pro launch, reflects Samsung's urgency to capture market share.
The India expansion for refurbished phones is key. India's mid- and low-price smartphone market, where devices under $600 made up 87% of Q1 shipments, offers significant growth potential. Samsung is directly challenging Apple by providing a premium alternative at a lower price point in a crucial emerging market.
The real test for Samsung is whether these refurbished devices cannibalize new S26 sales or genuinely expand its premium segment. The company must balance higher margins from new models with the volume gains from cheaper, certified pre-owned options. This dual approach could stabilize profit as chip costs rise.
