Samsung Wallet adds Rabbit Card for BTS, select MRT lines
Samsung Wallet now supports the Rabbit Virtual Card for public transport in Bangkok, allowing users to tap through gates on the BTS Skytrain and select MRT lines. The service, developed in partnership with Bangkok Smartcard System, began rolling out on October 20 for compatible Galaxy phones.
This service expands digital payment options for commuters in Bangkok by integrating a widely used transit card into Samsung's mobile wallet. The partnership with Bangkok Smartcard System brings the convenience of virtual cards to major urban rail lines, including the BTS Sukhumvit, Silom, and Gold lines, as well as the MRT Pink and Yellow lines. This reduces the reliance on physical cards for a significant portion of the city's public transport network.
However, the integration is not universal across Bangkok's transit system. Notably, the MRT Blue and Purple lines, which operate on a separate EMV Contactless payment system, remain unsupported. This distinction means commuters may still need to carry multiple payment methods depending on their travel routes, limiting the extent to which the new feature can fully replace physical cards for all journeys.
The rollout is also phased, with full support for eligible Galaxy models expected by October 26, and a promotion running until December 31. The requirement for Thai national ID verification and a facial scan for new users of the My Rabbit account suggests a focus on security and identity linkage, which could introduce a registration hurdle for some potential users. Furthermore, the service is restricted to specific Samsung smartphone models, excluding older devices.
Samsung's stated plans to expand payment support to other transport services later this year indicate a broader ambition for digital transit integration. This current launch, while significant for Rabbit Card users, serves as an initial step, highlighting both the progress in digitizing urban transit and the complexities of achieving full interoperability across diverse payment systems in a single city.
