RIVN Stock Hits Fresh 52-Week Lows After Partner Volkswagen Reportedly Weighs Xpeng Software For European Cars
Volkswagen is reportedly considering using its China-developed vehicle software, created jointly with Xpeng, for a significant share of its core European electric vehicle lineup, according to a Reuters report citing Manager Magazin. This potential move could reduce reliance on its existing U.S. partner, Rivian, whose shares slipped following the news.
Volkswagen is reportedly weighing a proposal to integrate its China Electronic Architecture, developed with Chinese EV maker Xpeng, into a substantial portion of its European mass-market electric vehicles. This plan, expected to be presented to management, would apply to approximately three-quarters of next-generation models from the Volkswagen, Skoda, and Cupra brands in Europe.
This consideration comes as Volkswagen has maintained distinct software strategies: Xpeng's architecture for the Chinese market and Rivian's for Western markets. The partnership with Rivian, established in late 2024 through a 50-50 joint venture, grants Volkswagen access to Rivian's electrical architecture and software stack for future Western-market vehicles, alongside significant investment for the U.S. startup.
Should Volkswagen proceed with using Xpeng's software for its European lineup, the reported shift suggests a potential reduction in its reliance on Rivian's technology for that region. This development highlights how major automakers navigate complex software development and partnership decisions across different global markets, balancing regional requirements and strategic alliances.
