Reporter’s notebook: Kimi’s AI credit card turns spending into computing quotas – with limits
Moonshot AI, the startup behind Kimi, has collaborated with Agricultural Bank of China (ABC) and American Express to introduce what it calls the "world's first AI native credit card." This card aims to convert consumer spending into access to AI services, including agent usage quotas and coding tools, with specific spending thresholds required to unlock these benefits.
This partnership between an AI startup, a major bank, and a global payment network represents an attempt to integrate AI service consumption with everyday financial transactions. Rather than relying solely on direct subscriptions, the initiative explores a value-added incentive structure where cardholders gain AI benefits through their spending.
The card's structure, including a premium platinum version, illustrates a tiered benefit system. For instance, spending 5,888 yuan (US$830) within a month grants two months of Kimi's Pro membership, which is priced at 199 yuan (US$30) per month. This mechanism aims to encourage specific spending behaviors by linking them to tangible AI service access.
The approach highlights an evolving strategy for AI monetization, moving beyond traditional direct payment models. By embedding AI services into a consumer finance product, Moonshot AI and its partners are testing a new channel to broaden user engagement and potentially drive adoption by making AI benefits a byproduct of routine financial activity.
