Protuoso Biosciences raises US$9.5 million to advance multifunctional biologics
Protuoso Biosciences, a US-headquartered biotechnology company developing multifunctional biologic therapies, has raised US$9.5 million in an oversubscribed seed financing round. Taiwanese VC funds Taya Venture and Darwin Ventures led the investment, which will advance the company's protein engineering platform and drug development pipeline for cardiometabolic, cancer, and autoimmune diseases.
The seed funding for Protuoso Biosciences, with leadership from Taiwanese VC firms, illustrates how capital from Asia is flowing into US-based biotech startups. This investment supports Protuoso's strategy of using computational protein design, synthetic biology, and AI-enabled engineering to develop 'Muxbodies.' These are designed to combine various protein components into a single molecule to engage multiple biological mechanisms, potentially addressing complex diseases more effectively than single-target therapies.
Protuoso's Muxbody platform aims to create therapies that can both activate and inhibit biological activities, tailoring treatments to diseases involving interconnected pathways. The company's 'hub-and-spoke' business model is designed to generate multiple drug candidates from this core platform. This approach allows for independent development, partnerships, or spin-outs, suggesting a diversified strategy for commercializing its therapeutic programs.
The company's pipeline includes therapies for obesity and related organ damage within cardiometabolic diseases, next-generation immune cell engagers for solid tumors, and expanded research into autoimmune conditions. Christopher Shen of Taya Venture noted the combination of platform technology, an experienced team, and a pathway to clinical development as factors making Protuoso an attractive early-stage investment.
